Introduced for the 1970 model year, the 911 S 2.2 Targa combined Porsche's high-performance S specification with the distinctive open-top Targa body. Its 2.2-litre air-cooled flat-six produced 180 PS, making the S the most powerful version of the original 911 range at the time, with a top speed of 230 km/h.
The Targa itself was an innovative alternative to both a conventional coupé and a traditional convertible. Porsche introduced the concept in the mid-1960s as a “safety cabriolet”, featuring a fixed steel rollover bar and removable roof section. The name was inspired by the legendary Targa Florio road race in Sicily.
