First revealed as the dramatic LP500 concept at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show, the Countach transformed into the production LP400 in 1974. Its futuristic wedge-shaped body, mid-mounted V12 and iconic scissor doors created a design that looked more like a concept car than a conventional road-going supercar.

The original LP400 was powered by a 4.0-litre V12 and represented the first production version of the Countach. Just 152 examples were built between 1974 and 1978, making the early LP400 particularly significant to collectors and Lamborghini enthusiasts.

The Lamborghini Countach began life as the LP500 concept, unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1971. Its futuristic appearance proved so popular that Lamborghini began the development work needed to turn the concept into a production car. The resulting Countach LP400 entered production in 1974.

The production Countach retained the concept's dramatic wedge-shaped design and became particularly famous for its upward-opening scissor doors, a feature that would subsequently become associated with Lamborghini's V12 supercars. Lamborghini credits Marcello Gandini of Bertone with the Countach's striking exterior design.

The LP400 used a 4.0-litre V12 mounted longitudinally behind the cockpit. Its clean bodywork, without the wider wheel-arch extensions seen on later versions, gave the original Countach a particularly pure appearance. Early cars also featured the recessed roof section above the driver's position, giving them the nickname “Periscopio” or “Periscopica.”

Only 152 LP400s were produced between 1974 and 1978, before the Countach evolved into the wider and more aggressively styled LP400S. The Countach ultimately remained in production until 1990 and became one of the defining automotive designs of the 1970s and 1980s.
